BACKGROUND OF THE PROJECT

“Yes,We KENya!” aims to give its contribution in fostering cooperation between Europe and Kenya by promoting activities that enhances the quality and recognition of youth work to favor youth empowerment as a way to address social challenges. The project aims to create a pool of 21 trainers in 3 countries able to use NFE methodology to promote active citizenship, social inclusion and democratic values in different contexts.

Youth often encounter difficulties in accessing education, employment, social protection and full access to civil and political rights, limiting their potential. There is a great need for specific protection to tackle discrimination against the youth and to remove the barriers that stop them from accessing their rights. Also In Italy and Spain, despite the European diffusion of several programmes for youth participation, there is still the need to work and educate youth in active participation in society through NFE.

OBJECTIVES/ WHAT WE DO?

1

PROMOTING YOUTH PARTICIPATION

IMG_7388_edited.jpg

Promoting youth participation has been identified as a common need as well as a common interest among the three countries involved, beyond differences of contexts.

In Kenya, difficulties to access education, unemployment, the lack of social protection and the limited access to civil and political rights are the main causes of discrimination which limit youth participation, preventing young people to fully access their rights as well as to contribute to the development of the society. Youth participation is a crucial issue also in Europe. Despite possibilities to be engaged and participate have increased at the National and European level, it is still low the number of young people taking the available opportunities. In the majority of case a sense of distrust seems to prevail with a consequent closing towards the others and the society in general.

BUILDING ON PREVIOUS SUCCESSES

In particular, the successful results of the project Nio Far implemented by AICEM in Italy, Spain and Senegal, brought our partner from Kenya to ask for a stronger cooperation to support youth organizations to be able to tackle social exclusion and marginalization of youth.

Also, the educational program brought by the Kenyan association will be added to the strategy: a comprehensive non-formal youth education program that develops the idea that the youth-to-youth education support (YES) approach enhances focus on the core youth competencies that define knowledge, skills and attitude development for the youth and educators, accompanied by ethical reflection and action to advance education, prevent the youth violence, rights and drugs abuse in communities.

Considering young people as strategic players in the future of society, the purpose of “Yes,WeKENya!” is creating a sustainable cooperation between Africa and Europe in the youth field through activities that will train Kenyan, Italian and Spanish young people to become active players, promoting active citizenship, social inclusion and democratic values in different contexts.
